m his only start this season for the B
DALLAS - Trevor Daley admitted he had a here we go again feeling during the second period on Saturday night. The Dallas Stars defenceman had seen his team lose leads and then lose games, including five in overtime at home this season. But after the New Jersey Devils tied Saturdays game after trailing by two goals, Daley did something about it.Daley and Shawn Horcoff scored late in the second period to help the Stars recover and beat the Devils 4-3.Definitely, Daley said of having bad feelings about a repeat. That seemed to be the way its been going, but we feel if we work hard, were going to get results.Tonight was one of those games.Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza each had a goal and an assist in the first period for the Stars, and Kari Lehtonen finished with 28 saves.Jon Merrill, Eric Gelinas and Scott Gomez scored for the Devils.Cory Schneider stopped 29 of the 33 shots he faced through two periods. Keith Kinkaid replaced Schneider to start the third and finished with three saves before being pulled for a sixth skater.I didnt blame (Schneider) for us being in the hole we were in, Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. That wasnt the reason.Merrill and Gelinas scored 3:20 apart to tie the score at 2-all at 7:46 of the second period.Daley got the tiebreaker with 5:05 left in the period and Horcoff restored the two-goal lead less than 2 minutes later. The Devils pulled to 4-3 when Gomez put in a rebound with 1:07 remaining in the third with a sixth skater on the ice.We pushed to the end, DeBoer said. It wasnt enough. The Devils outshot Dallas 11-3 in the third period, and kept the pressure on in the Stars end until the game ended.Horcoff said, I told (Spezza), Thats one way to do it. Just drop down on two knees, cover (the puck) and hang on. A lot of times, thats the best place for it to be, is under that pile.Dallas took a 1-0 lead on Seguins NHL-leading 23rd goal with 5:31 to go in the first. Erik Cole sent an easy pass into the top of the slot, and Seguin one-timed the puck past Schneider. The goal was Seguins fifth in the last four games and 16th in the last 16.Seguin assisted 2 1/2 minutes later as Spezza tried to put the puck into the right side of the net, retrieved it and attempted a wraparound shot from the left side, and then got the puck back and lifted it into the upper left corner.I thought we really dominated, even after 40 minutes, the possession, the shot, the chances, Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. I thought we skated really well.NOTES: Stars LW Ryan Garbutt sat out the first game of his three-game suspension for slew-footing Winnipegs Dustin Byfuglien. ... LW Travis Moen (upper-body injury) did not dress. . C Travis Morin, 30, played in only his eighth NHL game. Dallas recalled him Thursday from the AHL, where he was leading Texas with 24 points. . New Jersey LW Mike Cammalleri (lower-body injury) left early in the second period, and didnt return. ... Gomez was a rookie with the Devils when they defeated the Stars in the 2000 Stanley Cup finals. ... Steve Berniers assist on Gelinas goal was his 200th career point. ... Daleys goal was the first of his 11-year career against the Devils. . With a win tonight, Buehrle will match Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka for the most wins in the majors with 11. Buehrle is 10-4 with a 2.32 earned run average, but has lost his last three starts, including a 7-3 setback at Yankee Stadium last Wednesday. . Chris Heisey connected for his first grand slam and Devin Mesoraco homered and drove in a career high-tying four runs as Cincinnati took advantage of Tampa Bays depleted pitching staff for a 12-4 victory on Sunday. New York City FC introduced Frank Lampard in Brooklyn on Thursday after signing the 36-year-old former Chelsea midfielder to a two-year contract. .Y. -- Dallas Stars coach Lindy Ruff had an opportunity to experience an entire range of emotions in his first trip back to Buffalo to face his former team. . The Los Angeles Clippers showed them just how ugly that life could be. Jared Dudley scored a season-high 21 points, Chris Paul added 16 points and 17 assists, and the Clippers jumped all over the Bulls in Roses absence for a 121-82 victory Sunday.Urban Meyer and Nick Saban know each other well. They’re friends off the field, but more importantly to the college football fan, they’ve had some epic battles back in the day in the SEC. Those days are gone, Meyer trading his Florida Gators windbreaker for an Ohio State sweater vest, but for at least one more time, the two best coaches in college football will go head-to-head with major implications on the line. The matchup is too good to miss – so much so that Ohio State almost magically got better than both TCU and Baylor in the minds of College Football Playoff selection committee members. Saban leads the head-to-head series 2-1 but this game is about so much more than the men patrolling the sidelines. Long known for their impressive defence, Alabama brings one of the top offences in the nation to the Sugar Bowl. Led by receiver Amari Cooper and running back TJ Yeldon, the Crimson Tide averaged nearly 500 yards of offence per game, finishing 16th in the NCAA. Both Cooper and Yeldon will be worth keeping an eye on, Cooper projects to be a Top 10 selection in April’s NFL Draft while Yeldon should go somewhere in the second round, but safety Landon Collins may be the team’s best draft eligible prospect.dddddddddddd The junior led Alabama’s 11th ranked defence and should hear his name called in the Top 10 come late April as well. The big story in Ohio State is their seemingly endless supply of Heisman-calibre quarterbacks. After losing Braxton Miller, who many had pegged as a Heisman frontrunner, for the year to a shoulder injury, the Buckeyes found JT Barrett who finished fifth in Heisman voting. Then, when Barrett was lost for the season to an ankle injury on Rivalry Weekend, one-time third stringer Cardale Jones led OSU to a huge Big 10 Championship win over Wisconsin. Jones will need to show he can sustain his play from his only start this season for the Buckeyes to have a chance in this one, but at the very least he gives Ohio State fans hope they can hang with Alabama. There was some surprise that Ohio State found their way into the Top 4 teams and the innagural College Football Playoff, and the betting line shows that as Alabama enters the Sugar Bowl as 9.5-point favourites. It’s a great story, let’s just hope it turns out to be a great game too. ' ' '
