CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Panthers All-Pro fullback Mike Tolbert will miss at least eight games with a hairline fracture in his left leg. Tolbert was placed on the injured reserve/designated to return list Tuesday. Under that designation, Tolbert can practice after six weeks, but isnt eligible to play until Nov. 30 at Minnesota. The bruising fullback was injured on a tackle involving ex-Panthers safety Mike Mitchell in Carolinas 37-19 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday night. Tolbert had seven rushing touchdowns last season. Carolina signed linebacker D.J. Smith to fill Tolberts roster spot. The 6-foot, 240-pound Smith attended training camp with the Panthers and was on their practice squad before being released on Sept. 3. Smith has played in 23 games with nine starts. Smith has 80 career tackles, two sacks and one interception. . During the furious first few hours of free agency Tuesday, the team agreed to terms with strong safety Donte Whitner, a Cleveland native who cant wait to play in his hometown. . Jeter doubled high off the left-field wall and scored on Jacoby Ellsburys first hit in pinstripes in the fifth. Hiroki Kuroda (1-1) pitched 6 1-3 sharp innings in the Yankees 112th opener in New York. In what manager Joe Girardi said would be a season-long lovefest for Jeter, the shortstop was cheered every step of the way by an adoring crowd of 48, 142 -- even when his double-play grounder back to Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez (0-2) scored Solarte in the third inning for the first run. "He started putting me on the ice to strengthen them at the suggestion from a doctor," he said. Weight said it wasnt a pretty sight at the rink in St. Clair Shores, Mich. "I looked like Forrest Gump," he joked. . City has reached new heights under manager Manuel Pellegrini as they transition from big spending/immediate impact to perennial contender. Yaya Toures seeming discontent Tuesday may complicate that, as does the little issue of Financial Fair Play. . The Kelowna, B.C. rink made the announcement on their facebook page on Thursday night. Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that veteran infielders Rhyne Hughes and Yurendell de Caster have been placed on irrevocable waivers for the purpose of granting their unconditional release. Hughes, 30, has encountered some health problems that will prevent him from playing this season. “Its unfortunate ffor Rhyne that he cant join our ball club, but his health is the No.dddddddddddd 1 priority and we wish him a quick recovering,” Forney said. De Caster, 34, is once again starting the season in Mexico. The Goldeyes now have 25 players on their training camp roster, including 14 pitchers and 11 position players. ' ' '
